First called the Normal News when founded in 1881, the Eastern Echo has served the Eastern Michigan University and Ypsilanti communities as an independent newspaper for more than 125 years.

Publishing Schedule

Fall semester (September-December): Monday and Thursday
Winter semester (January-April): Monday and Thursday
Spring semester (May-June): Tuesday
Summer semester (July-August): Breaking news posted online only

The newspaper offices are currently located on the second floor of King Hall on Eastern Michigan’s campus. After entering King’s West door, the Echo offices are up the stairs and the first door on the left.

What does “independent” mean?

The Eastern Echo is paid for solely through its own advertising revenue. This means the university cannot dictate management or content. All Echo employees are required to be at least part-time students at the university; the only full-time faculty is the student media director, who has no editorial influence over the newspaper’s content. The Echo’s student leadership is overseen by the Student Media Board, which is chaired by EMU faculty, advisers, administrators and members of the local community.
